Comoros Overview

Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros, is a sovereign archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa between Madagascar and Mozambique. Comoros is the third-smallest African country by area.

Comoros Demographics

Most of the population of the Comoros is descended from African-Arabs. Sunni Islam is the main religion that represents up to 98% of the population. While Arab culture is dominant in the country, there is a small population of Mayotte, who are mostly immigrants from France. There are also small populations of Malagasy and Indians, with some people of French and European ancestry. Most French people left Comoros after it gained independence in 1975.

There are also between 200,000 and 35,000 Comorians living in France.

Since its independence, the Comoros has gone through many coups and half of the population now lives below the international poverty line of $1.25 USD per day.

Comoros has a very young population with nearly 50% of the population under the age of 15. The life expectancy in the country is currently 67 for women and 62 for men.
